The concept of equality in our nodern day society is sadly lacking in equal thought. No one person shoukd be any less valuable than the next, according to US constitution. Unfortunatly, for a great many citezens, that is not the way it really works.
Its, in this writers opinion, one of the biggest disservices to the population that our govornment can not understand the diffrence between religion and state. The policy makers often forget that the constitution also specifically states that religion and state should never cross.
The constitution is blatantly ignored when it comes to subjects such as same sex marriage. Trust me, i know first hand. The fight remains the same. The bible says it is a sin to be homosexual while the fundamentals of our country says that it does not matter what the bible says. The lines of religikn and state are blurred.
What has this got to do with equality, you ask? Everything for a homosexual. Without having equal rights, that means there are no recognized rights for them. A company can fire fire a homosexual if that is thier choice. The argument being that at-will employers need no reason to fire a person as long as its not for discrimination against religion, gender and ethicity. In no way are homosexual protected against discrimination.
Being homosexual and trying to establish the right just to mary is the modern-day version of the civil rights movement and thats just to say "I do". To develop genuine equality, that a homosexual can feel secure in thier daily lives, is still a long way from where American culture is today. Health, happiness and love, as usual in America when dealing with a subject of new and diffrent , takes a back seat.
